Many people think that they can only achieve their fitness goals at the gym, but that’s not necessarily true. Back in 2020 when the COVID situation forced everyone indoors, people had to find more creative ways to get their workouts done from their homes.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re at the gym, fitness studio, in your bedroom, or garage — with the right mindset and consistency, you can still exercise and achieve your fitness goals.

How much space do you need to set up a workout area at home?

According to the American Council on Exercise, you need a workout space of at least 8 feet by 8 feet, or 2.4 meters by 2.4 meters to get started with your in-home personal training. The space, of course, must be free from any tripping hazards.

If you’re looking to add exercise equipment, here are the minimum space requirements:

  • Treadmill: 30 square feet
  • Elliptical trainer: 30 square feet
  • Free weights: 20 to 50 square feet
  • Stationary Bike: 10 square feet
  • Rowing machine: 20 square feet

5 exercises you can do at home with minimal space

When doing at-home workouts, you’ll need to make the best use of the available space. Obviously, you can’t do all the routines you’d normally do at the gym, so it’s important to focus on exercises that you can do simply and without requiring heavy-duty equipment.

1. Jumping Jacks

Jumping jacks is a total body workout that you can do almost anywhere. A great cardio exercise, jumping jacks work your lungs, heart, and muscles at the same time.

When you perform jumping jacks, you don’t only increase your heart rate, you also work your glutes, core, and shoulder muscles. What’s great about jumping jacks too is that it requires very minimal space and no equipment.

2. Push-ups

A classic exercise, push-ups are a great addition to your at-home workout since you need only minimal floor space and no special equipment.

When performed correctly, push-ups work many of your body’s major muscles that can help you develop strength and muscle endurance.

Push-ups are also a great toning exercise to prepare your body for harder workouts or sports.

3. Squats

Want to tone your glutes and thighs? Squats are your workout best friend.

You can perform this exercise anywhere in the house. If performed with the proper instructions from a personal trainer, squats can help you achieve a toned butt and an improved core in no time.

4. Sit-ups

If you want to achieve abs or just strengthen your core, sit-ups are a classic exercise that requires minimal space. This workout stabilizes your abdominal muscles, as well as strengthens and tones your core.

When done consistently, sit-ups promote good posture and improve your abdominal muscles.

5. Indoor cycling

Love cycling but can’t go out? Consider investing in a stationary bike so you can squeeze in your hobby and work out any time of the day.

Indoor cycling requires minimal floor space too — around 10 square feet only. Set it up in front of your television or computer so you can pedal away along with your personal trainer on the screen.

Remember to put a rubber mat under your stationary bike to protect your floor so that you can pedal without scuffing the floor surface.
